You Tube iframe Embed & WordPress
WordPress doesn’t yet like iframes but other websites are really embracing them this year. The main reason I have been given for youtube to do so is that mobile iphones and androids browsing websites can’t see flash, so the iframe option evens the playing field for mac apps again and ours is not to reason why, just to try and keep up with everyone else’s changes. 🙂
The old youtube embed code is still there if you check the box to use it, but the default is now the new iframe code. Try putting this in a WordPress blog post in html view and it may (read will probably) be stripped out after the next save. WordPress does not like iframes!
So, you basically either need to place your code somewhere else other than the post editor and include it, or use a plugin that does this for you.
When I started writing this post I had watched a couple of these video below and assumed the recommended plugin was a good idea but I’ve since changed my mind after installing and now I am trying out a few alternatives.
There is a usage video below that explains a bit more… and I thought I’d put it in twice – like an OLD-NEW before and after example – to see what appears…
This is a bit of an experiment as I personally think iframes are less reliable. But then I’ve just been wrestling with Facebook’s iframe version for the last two months! But who are we to stop the march of progress – if its the way of the future I’m sure everything will all just improve over time. ( gee I wish you could hear the tone of voice I wrote that in)
So this first video is embedded in the normal way from you tube.
(assuming both are showing – 1 should be directly over this text and 2 should be directly under this text)
(DONT) Get this plugin as the video suggests : wordpress.org/extend/plugins/iframe-embed-for-youtube/
It appears to insert a link under the video, not to the plugin but to their website – quite within their rights but – not something that I approve of, when I have no control over this. I also tried another plugin which blythly and without permission inserted their blog feeds onto my dashboard and fascinating 🙁 as it was to visit and see a photograph of a tray of green and red vodka jello cups for July 4th, I can’t afford to be tempted to view such distractions! Jeez Louise!
This plugin is my choice for an iframe YouTube wp plugin
You use it with a shortcode open and close tag [tube] with the number or id of the video (from the you tube url) between the tags. No added links feeds or anything else have as yet been observed….
4 hours to try out and find a clean free plugin – don’t say I don’t help you guys out!
Here are a few other possible solutions, especially if you tube isn’t your flavour, because iframes are IN! These are simply iframe embedding plugins not specifically for you tube or any one site.
- YouTube @ Google I/O: The iframe Player API (apiblog.youtube.com)
- YouTube’s Pages for Blogs, Now Available (googlesystem.blogspot.com)
- YouTube now offers video players without its logo (thenextweb.com)
