WordPress Tutorial: How to add new link categories
Add New Link Categories
This tutorial demonstrates how to add new link categories in WordPress.
Your blogroll allows you to show external or internal links. It is a simple content form with only five options. The main is the url of the link, there is a title which will be what is displayed as the anchor text, a slug for the title, a description and an option to display an image. The slug is what will display in the url to links page for the category, you do not need to create it, it will be automatically created by stripping the title of capitals and filling spaces with dashes, but you have the option to create a smaller url slug if you wish.
Most people use their blogroll to display related sites that they read and enjoy, passing on a little link love to favourite blogs or resources. With categories you can create several different uses for your blogroll links. You could name this first usage favourite sites, or friends and perhaps then create a category for free resources.
The default link widget will separate and show your blogroll links sorted by their category. This makes it easier for people to assess links, especially if you have a long list.
If you have a links template page in your Theme or use a plugin to manage links such as Link Library, then you need not use the widget or display links in your sidebar at all. Instead you will have a dedicated links page where an image and description is easier to display than in the tiny space of your sidebar.
With the use of the category id and a plugin or widget, you could also create several different pages for different categories of links, making a small link directory.
